Equipment Positioning for Ergonomic Health
Workstation Ergonomic Best Practices
- You should be sitting back in your chair, shoulders relaxed.
- Your wrists should be slightly flexed and the keyboard should be just beneath your fingers.
- The keyboard and mouse are at elbow height.
- Your elbows are close to your side.
- Your neck is in the neutral posture, ears over shoulders.
- Your eye level is no higher or lower than the top of the monitor screen.
- The screen is at arm’s length.
- Your phone is close to you to minimize reaching.
- No direct lighting or sunlight falls on the screen, causing glare or reflection.

Computer Monitor
- Place your monitor directly in front of you to maintain good posture.
- Adjust the height of your monitor so your line of vision intersects the top of the screen.
- Monitor should be placed approximately one arm’s length away from you.
- Place your monitor at a right angle to windows and keep the screen perpendicular to the desktop to avoid glare.
Keyboard / Mouse
- Keep a soft touch on the keyboard and the mouse, hands and fingers relaxed
-Your keyboard should be placed low enough so that you can type/mouse w ith relaxed shoulders and elbows bent at 90 degrees.
- If you are using a laptop, use a full size keyboard and mouse to allow for elevating the screen to eye level.
- Keep your keyboard and mouse close to you.
- Align your keyboard and mouse with your monitor.
Chair
- Your arms should be at a 90 degree angle from the keyboard or desk top.
- Your feet should be flat on the floor. Use a footrest if needed.
- Your legs should form a right angle to the floor, adjust the seat height if necessary.
- Your back should be supported, adjust the back angle, if necessary.
- The angle of the seat bottom should be about the same as the lever on the side of the chair.
